The four most common species in the United States are the American, Brown-Banded, German and Oriental cockroaches.
American cockroaches are found in moist shady areas such as hollow trees, wood piles, and mulch underneath roof shingles and in attics. The cockroaches are normally outside, but will come indoors to find food and water or to circumvent extreme weather conditions.
Brown-Banded cockroaches desire warm and dry locations. Examples: near refrigerator motor housings, on the upper walls of cabinets, and inside pantries, closets, dressers, and furniture in general. They seek shelter behind picture frames and beneath tables and chairs, and inside clocks, radios, light switch plates, doorframes, and dressers. It is typical to find them hiding nearer the ceiling than the floor and away from water sources.
German cockroach – The color fluctuates from tan to almost black, and it has a couple dark, roughly parallel, streaks on the pronotum running anteroposteriorly from behind the head to the base of the wings. They are principally scavengers and will eat on a wide variety of foods. They are fond of starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. Garbage is a principal food source. Like most of its kin, German cockroaches are active at night when they look for food, water, and mates.
Cockroaches are mostly medium to large sized insects. They measure over 2 inches long. Male cockroaches are typically smaller than females. Female companions often tend to be larger and, in some species, the females lack wings where the males possess them. Some possess have wings but most winged cockroaches are not particularly adept at flying.
Cockroaches are scavengers. One can survive a long time without food. Some can go as long as 6 weeks without a meal! These qualities make cockroaches in our homes hard to control. American cockroaches can live for approximately one year. With a severed head, it can survive without eating for weeks. Ultimately, the cockroach will either dehydrate or surrender to mold. Cockroaches long for something solid to be in contact with their bodies, so they seek out cracks and crevices, and will squeeze into spaces that afford them the comfort of a tight fit. This is why you will sometimes find them behind pictures on a wall. Such insects are considered pests because they can spread many diseases This is purely due to them commonly being found near waste deposits or in the kitchen, where food is present.
